Odor Control FAQ

Odor Control Scrubbers, Including Tower Packing FAQ

Q.  What’s a realistic efficiency target for an odor control scrubber?

A. Many odors, including both those that are formally regulated and those that
are “nuisance” odors, are detectable below 1 ppm.  Therefore, an odor control scrubber
that warrants a mass reduction to below 1.0 ppmv is needed.

Q. Is there a practical “high” or “low” air volume for a single odor control scrubber?

A. The volume of gas that can be accommodated by a single stage odor control
scrubber assembly is between 25 scfm (6” Ø) to 75,000 scfm (15’ Ø)

Q. Is it possible to engineer an odor control scrubber for both odors and corrosives?

A. Yes, we can design an odor control scrubber system can simultaneously reduce N/S based odors and other industrial corrosives, both alkali and acid-based.

Q. Will an odor control scrubber tolerate particulate and other contaminants?

A.  Extol Hydro Technologies odor control scrubbers are unaffected by dirty gas streams that may contain submicron and larger particulate, and various inorganic scrubber compounds in addition to the primary odor constituent.

Q.  Is there an odor control scrubber that uses very little water, even when loadings vary?

A.  We can design an odor control scrubber that is engineered specifically to use very little water and to yield a clean stack under all loading conditions. Water usage is always dependent on the inlet load and contaminant, salt generation and, most importantly, the heat generated from the first two items.  Knowing the inlet load in lbs./hr. or ppmv on a consistent basis, will help with the purge water to waste chemical usage ratio.

Q.  How important is packing media to the efficiency of an odor control scrubber?

A.  Packing media is important.  If chosen properly, it helps minimize the design size of the odor control scrubber. Media also influences odor control scrubber efficiency: if it provides maximum surface contact between the gas and the scrubbing liquid, it facilitates continuous formation of droplets throughout the packed bed.  This is what allows scrubbing efficiency to be consistently high and operation costs overall to be kept to a minimum.

Q.  Are there other physical characteristics of packing media used in an
odor control scrubber that are important?

A.  Yes – if the media is engineered for superior wetting, it will help maintain liquid distribution throughout the packed bed, which also impacts odor control scrubber efficiency.

Q.  Is occasional clogging of the odor control scrubber tower packing inevitable?

A.  No, some odor control scrubber packing won’t clog under any operating conditions, because it has no flat surfaces or minute openings to harbor particulate. This particular design also prevents compression interlock, a common phenomena which decreases
the operating efficiency of the odor control scrubber.

Q.  If the process changes, how easy is it to adapt the odor control scrubber to the new requirement?

A.  Our well-engineered odor control scrubbers are highly adaptable to new requirements. A change on chemical feed pending the new containments and a re-address to the systems overall reduction efficiency calculations for the new parameters, SCFM, inlet loads and contaminate types versus new required abatement parameters for that specific location would need to be done prior to scrubber process changes and re-start under the new conditions.
